Assignment 1: Manual Manipulation

Due: Wednesday Apr 10, 2019

The goal of this assignment is to get you familiarized with a current video editing tool (e.g. Adobe Premiere), and with the process of going from idea, to raw footage, to edited video.

Plan an interview

Pick a classmate (talk to us if this is a problem for you) and plan to interview them. Decide what your interview is going to be about: their life story, an interesting hobby or anything else you find exciting. Ask them preliminary questions and plan the interview.

Interview

Record the interview. You should capture at least 15 minutes of raw footage. Put your camera on a stand or stabilize it against a support for recording. Do not hold the camera in your hand while recording. Logistics will be easier if you can use your own equipment (cell phone cameras are enough for this assignment), but let us know if you require special equipment and we’ll try to accomodate.

You should also be mindful of the end product you are trying to achieve. For example, if you are going for a Q&A format, make sure your questions are audible, as well as the answers.

Edit

Use video editing software (e.g. Adobe Premiere, iMovie, FinalCut Pro, etc.) to edit the raw footage into a publishable video you would be proud to share online. The video should not be longer than 2 minutes.

Reflect

Describe any difficulties you encountered. Did you have to record multiple times? If so, why? Were there pain point in the editing process? Think of ways parts of the editing process can be improved and/or automated.

Deliverables

Your final submission should include:

  • Raw footage. (at least 15 minutes)
  • Edited result. (no longer than 2 minutes)
  • Reflections. (half page max PDF)

Grading

We will grade based on whether or not you were able to deliver all of the required parts of the submission. We will not judge quality of the results in this assignment, but we do ask that you produce an edited result you would be proud to share online and with the class.
